We’re partnering with a respected CBD advisory practice to appoint an Assistant Manager who can take ownership of client relationships, lead workflow, and contribute to the continued growth of a modern, commercially focused BAS team. This role suits an experienced accountant ready to step further into leadership, advisory delivery, and portfolio management.
You’ll work closely with senior leaders, manage a varied client base, and play a key role in developing junior team members — all within a supportive, collaborative environment that values initiative, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
The opportunity
In this role, you’ll oversee a portfolio of privately owned businesses, trusts, companies, and high‑net‑worth clients. You’ll be the day‑to‑day contact for your clients, ensuring high‑quality delivery across compliance, reporting, and advisory.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing a portfolio of BAS clients across multiple industries
- Building strong client relationships through proactive communication and commercial insight
- Preparing and reviewing financial statements, tax returns, GST, FBT, management accounts, budgets, and cashflow forecasts
- Providing practical commercial advice on business performance, profitability, cashflow, structuring, tax planning, and financial modelling
- Leading workflow across your portfolio, reviewing work, delegating effectively, and supporting resource planning
- Coaching and mentoring Graduate, Intermediate, and Senior Accountants
- Supporting staff training, onboarding, and team capability development
- Maintaining strong technical knowledge across NZ IFRS (where applicable), NZ tax legislation, Companies Act, Trust legislation, AML/CFT obligations and IRD requirements
- Contributing to business development, proposal preparation, networking, and firm‑wide initiatives
- Ensuring compliance with internal policies, quality assurance processes, and risk management requirements
This is a role with real breadth, combining client ownership, technical review, advisory delivery, and leadership.
About you
You’ll bring a blend of technical strength, commercial judgement, and people leadership. Ideally, you have:
- CA ANZ (or equivalent) qualification
- 5–7 years’ experience in a New Zealand public practice environment
- Strong NZ tax knowledge and confidence reviewing financial statements and returns
- Experience managing a client portfolio
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical capability and attention to detail
- Proven leadership skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Experience mentoring junior staff (advantageous)
- Business advisory and consulting experience (advantageous)
